Help with brand of monitors?

Postby GJSP » Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:23 pm

Looking for recommendations for a pair of monitors to produce bass music on for around £300, brand new or second hand?

This is a very very very low budget for monitors. :frown:

There are a few under £1,000 that are OK, but you have set yourself an extremely low price.

I would look at the KRK range as these do seem to be the better ones around at the low end price bracket - not sure if there is anything quite in the £300 range, though.

That's a tight budget unfortunately. Accurate bass is difficult at the best of times! for that music I guess you'd generally be talking sub reproduction down to 35-40 Hz min. hard without good drivers, decent amps and generally slightly larger speakers which usually cost slightly more, and then considerably more... then there's the acoustic problems to think about if your room is untreated...

On the plus side, have you considered decent headphones instead? I have some closed back HD280s for tracking and they give a good indication of how something will sound... There are much better open-back headphone options within budget with more accurate bass of course. if that's an option you'd consider? you could get phones then upgrade to monitors later if budget grows? It’s always good to cross check on different speakers/phones and also you can work till late into the night

Definitely look for something secondhand. Are there any local studios selling up? I bought my old Tannoys from another studio at a price within your budget although it was quite a few years ago. There are always bargains to be had if you are patient and cast your net wide enough.

Second hand you might be able to bag a pair of the original Mackie HR624s. I know it seems frustrating to have people telling you your budget isn't big enough but assuming you won't be working in an acoustically-treated room and you want bass I'd seriously consider a good pair of headphones instead. You could get a second-hand pair of Sennhesier HD600s or beyer DT880s for under half your budget and then you could continue saving for a second-hand pair of decent 4" or 5" monitors (e.g. Focal).

If you can wait till January, Adam is releasing two new monitors. In the US, a pair will be a little above your budget. But what they will sell for elsewhere, who knows?

You can find the video on the SOS site from the AES convention.

What about these. Been meaning to audition them at Studiospares next time I am down their way. The user reviews are generally favourable. ... vt/248030/
