NAMM 2009: Roland AX Synth (Video)

Shoulder Synth

For the shoulder keyboard fans amongst you (yes, you, the ones playing your keyboard like a guitar), Roland have released the AX Synth, which resembles the almost legendary Roland AX1, AX5 and AX7 ‘keytar’ MIDI controllers.
The big difference between the new model and the old classics, however, is that the AX Synth, as its name suggests, has sounds on board. This means you can use it without having to trail a MIDI cable around the stage; all you need is an audio output, and this can be transmitted via a guitar ‘bug’, enabling fully wireless operation.
The AX Synth’s in-built sounds are taken from some of the latest Roland synths, and a range of modulation options pave the way for a veritable feast of keys-based riffs. With six hours of battery life from eight AA cells, those lucky enough to enjoy an AX Synth performance should expect to settle in for the long haul! The AX Synth costs £949 and will be shipping before the summer.
