Frankfurt 2009: Antelope Zodiac & Zodiac Plus

Desktop D-A converters
Master clock experts Antelope Audio have launched two new products aimed at the home- and project-studio market. The Zodiac and Zodiac Plus are both digital-to-analogue converters that have digital inputs, analogue outputs, and feature the same high-quality clock generators found in Antelope’s Trinity master clock.

Antelope say the Zodiacs can be used in a number of applications, such as on-stage using a digital-output-equipped synth — pretty much wherever the user needs high-quality D-A conversion. But the obvious use in the studio is as a monitor controller. The large volume knob gives precise control over the analogue line-level output, while a headphone amp with dedicated volume control enables the user to examine mixes and work at night without switching monitoring systems.

The Zodiac Plus has some additional features not found on the standard model, such as AES/EBU inputs (the standard version has S/PDIF and optical stereo inputs only), as well as S/PDIF and AES/EBU outputs, which carry the de-jittered signal. Both models have XLR and RCA line-level outputs.

The Plus also has BNC inputs for an external word clock, and an ‘atomic’ input, for connecting one of Antelope’s Atomic clocks. Prices are still to be confirmed, as are the finishes of the two Zodiacs. (At the Frankfurt Musikmesse, the Zodiac Plus had a gold face and black body, while in the picture here, it's silver.)
