RME's new QuadMic II four-channel preampThe QuadMic II is an update to RME's four-channel mic preamp that we reviewed in December 2003. Although it doesn't have any digital interfacing like its larger sibling, the OctaMic XTC, the QuadMic II features four balanced microphone and line inputs with Neutrik XLR/TRS combo jacks, switchable 48V phantom power, phase reversal and a low cut filter.
All channels are also equipped with LEDs for signal presence, clip state, and phantom power status. Input amplification can be set from 6 to 60 dB. The balanced line level output signals are provided on the rear of the unit as four 1/4-inch TRS jacks.
The QuadMic II is intended to complement any RME system with line inputs by adding external microphone inputs. A maximum balanced and unbalanced output level of +21 dBu makes the QuadMic II fully compatible with all of RME's converters and interfaces that have analogue inputs.
Since the unit runs on supply voltages from 9 to 18V DC, it can operate on virtually any power source available, including batteries, making it suitable for location recording.
With a signal to noise ratio of 129 dB EIN, and total harmonic distortion lower than 0.0005% with 30dB of gain, the QuadMic II is a serious contender for sound engineers looking to add extra inputs to their system.
