Summer NAMM 2014: PreSonus AudioBox i-Series (Video)

USB/iPad recording system

AudioBox iSeries and Capture Duo

PreSonus were unveiling some new gear at Summer NAMM this week. First off, there were two new USB 2 bus-powered audio interfaces called the AudioBox iOne and iTwo. These boxes are compatible with Mac and Windows, but really come into their own when used in conjunction with the PreSonus Capture Duo recording app on iPad.

PreSonus Capture Duo iPad appWhat's special about using the i-Seres interfaces with Capture Duo is the ability to wirelessly send tracks from your iPad straight into the Studio One Artist DAW on your studio computer, all with a single click. This offers the best of both worlds for location recording, allowing a light and portable recording rig and a quick way of getting tracks into the computer for editing. As well as shipping with Studio One Artist, the interfaces also comes bundled with a Nimbit Free account for online direct distribution of music, merchandise, and more.

The AudioBox iOne ($129) sports an instrument input and a mic input, while AudioBox iTwo ($159) offers two combo inputs that accept mic, line or instrument sources. Both feature Class-A mic preamplifiers with phantom power, 105dB of dynamic range, and converters that allow 24-bit recording at sample rates up to 96 kHz. The DACs feed balanced 1⁄4-inch, line-level outputs and a headphone output with independent level control. The AudioBox iTwo also includes MIDI In and Out. Each interface has an internal analog mixer with zero-latency monitoring, too.

Helpfully, the interfaces carry both USB A and B ports so they can be connected to your computer or iPad without needing Apple's infamous Camera Connection Kit. Both ship today.

Capture Duo, the two-track recording software for iPad is free from the Apple App Store and is based on PreSonus’ Capture live-recording software for StudioLive mixers. Capture Duo lets you record and play two tracks with 24-bit, 96 kHz fidelity and includes basic mixing and editing features as well as an integrated metronome.

PreSonus also offers Capture for iPad, which can record up to 32 tracks with the same features and 24-bit, 96 kHz fidelity. Capture for iPad is available from the Apple App Store for an expected price of $9.95.

AudioBox iTwo Studio Recording Kit

PreSonus have updated their AudioBox Studio bundle with the new AudioBox iTwo interface as well. In addition to the interface, the bundle includes Studio One Artist DAW, Presonus HD7 studio monitoring headphones, the M7 large-diaphragm condenser microphone and a NimBit Free account.
