The AWS 900 Analogue Workstation System
Solid State Logic have unveiled a new analogue console which can also function as a controller for most of the major digital audio workstations, such as Pro Tools, Nuendo and Logic, using the HUI protocol. The new AWS 900 Analogue Workstation System combines SSL's 'Super Analogue' signal processing technology with an integral colour TFT screen and dedicated DAW controls. The motorised faders, which are the only dual purpose controls, can be switched between the analogue console and the DAW control layer.
The AWS 900's 24 analogue channels feature low noise input amps (with mic, line and instrument inputs), four-band parametric E- and G-series EQ, eight auxes, but no dedicated dynamics. Two floating, mono SSL dynamics sections can be assigned to channels or busses as required and there is also a G-series stereo compressor on the mix buss. The console is configured with 2 stereo busses (Record and Mix), with Cue and Aux busses making up a total of 20 outputs. Each channel also has a direct output and an insert point. A user-definable shaft encoder and 8-character display within each channel can be used to access DAW functions.
The master section offers extensive metering options, transport controls and comprehensive monitoring with four 5.1 inputs plus four stereo monitor inputs . Shaft encoders and modifier keys allow access to the DAW's main edit, mix, automation and plug-in parameters, although there is no automation available for the analogue side of the console, save for the faders. The AWS 900 also features a built-in power supply.
The system appears to be designed for the DAW user who might currently be utilising a large number of channel strip modules, a seperate DAW control surface and perhaps a monitor controller. The AWS 900 integrates all these elements together in one convenient package, priced at £49,500. Contact SSL for more information.
