Sorry... you'll need to ask the journalist involved, or Meyer themselves. I do know for a fact that the advanced compression driver technology was mentioned in at least some of the brochures and white papers on the X10 because I wrote them!

Oddly, though, only one of my papers appears to still be available in the Meyer website's archive.

Yes maybe the journo here had completely missed the significance of the advance in compression driver performance, hence the article misses it also.

Speakers can sound wildly different, depending on placement and room acoustics
AIR Studios 3 and 4 were identical layout but had different speakers in 1976, so you really could hear the JBLs (let's be kind here) had a pronounced upper mid peak.

A pronounced frequency response anomoly and pronounced THD are very different things..

If the Tannoys were using HPD drivers (which they may well have been at that time) then the difference would be more pronounced as the HPD's have a reputation for a slightly reduced upper midrange level. Interestingly the Tannoy dual concentric HF driver is also a horn loaded compression driver but it uses a 'pepperpot' waveguide in the HPD in an attempt to improve the sound.

The freq. response anomalies of the JBL we were discussing (the smiley curve bit), at least as per the response graph, are very mild in both Q and gain and if needed could be easily reduced with a very mild parametric tweak or two.

The same with similar mild anomalies in another speaker such as a Tannoy. If the differences between such studio monitors were perceived as significant would the studio people have made such tweaks? I would have.

What Hugh says about the HF compression driver distortion problem as "the JBL sound" (or any other speaker using the same technology) makes more sense to me now as an explanation for perceived unacceptable sound.
