SSL SiX 500-series channel strip discussion

Postby Ben Asaro » Sat Apr 10, 2021 12:31 pm

Has anyone seen this?

The new SSL 500 series channel strip looks intriguing! Mic preamp, EQ, and compression for only $400 USD/ 279 GBP. You could set up 2 channels in a small 500-series rackmount for $1k. I think the only thing it's missing is an effects insert.

I'm curious as to how this stacks up against the Alpha Channel, I've often wondered about adding a second Alpha Channel for stereo operation.

Looks interesting.

I have a little 4-slot 500 chassis, currently with two Cranborne Camden 500 preamps and two empty slots. The plan was to wait and see if Cranborne have a 500 compressor up their sleeves, or get another couple of Camden preamps.

These SSLs are priced similarly and are quite tempting, although I think I'd be more likely to go for the SiX desk itself sometime down the line.

If you're already into 500 then it seems a bargain. I'm not and it counts me out. :(

Yes, cost of entry can be rather steep.

It took a while to dawn on me that for the cost of my 4-slot chassis and two Camden 500 modules, I wasn't far off the cost of an SSL SiX in the first place!

I'd like this and the AMS reverb, but racking it would leave a heck of a chunk of wasted rack space.

If I ever lose access to the old AMS in the studio, I could well be tempted by the 500 version.

The case I got was the Heritage Audio OST 4 - just enough space for the AMS and one SSL channel ;). But yes, you'd probably need to find space outside the rack for it, unless the added features of something like the Cranborne 500 ADAT holds any appeal.

I did try the Midas 6-slot case to begin with, but it had a horrible whining PSU.

Radial also make a 3-slot case than can be recessed into a desktop.
