Minnesota-based LaChapell Audio are 20 years old this year, and announced two new tube-based mic preamps in January that call back to the company’s first product, the respected 992 mic pre. Both new preamps are now shipping.

The half-rack, single-channel 983M is aimed at travelling musicians and podcasters, while the two-channel 983SMk2 is a rackmount designed for studio use. Both are based around a 12AX7/ECC83 tube, and feature high- and low-pass filters with selectable roll-off frequencies, channel mute, pad and polarity switches, and front-panel high‑impedance inputs. Both units also offer True48, a more stable and robust form of phantom power for mics connected to them.

The 983M costs £$1199 in the UKUS; the more expensive 983S Mk2 is £$1999. For more details regarding UK availability, contact the UK distributor KMR Audio.
