Two lucky winners will each receive not one, but two prestigious microphones from sE Electronic, worth a combined €3300$3600. Enter to win!
Perhaps more than any other modern mic brand, sE Electronics are responsible for bringing older microphone technologies back into the mainstream. In 2006, their R1 model helped pave the way for the ribbon mic revolution, while their 2004 release, the Gemini, included not one but two valves in its circuitry.
The Prizes
For this month’s exclusive SOS competition, we’re giving two lucky readers the chance to win one of each of sE’s prestigious microphones: their flagship RNR1 ribbon mic, and the large-diaphragm valve-based Gemini II.
As well as continuing sE’s tradition for building quality ribbon microphones, the RNR1 was the first microphone ever to have been designed in collaboration with legendary audio engineer Rupert Neve. An active mic, the RNR1 uses two Neve-designed transformers: one is directly coupled to the ribbon and feeds the Class-A active circuitry, which then feeds another Neve output transformer. The ribbon itself is an aluminium affair, just 2.5 microns thick, and hand‑tensioned to deliver the best possible performance. The combination of Rupert Neve circuitry and a lightweight, responsive ribbon gives the RNR1 a much extended HF response compared to classic designs, while still exhibiting the flawless figure-8 pickup pattern and smooth sound for which ribbon mics are known and loved.
Like its predecessor, the Gemini II boasts two valves in its signal path — a 12AX7 as the impedance converter and a 12AU7 to drive the output. The use of a second valve in place of the usual output transformer gives the Gemini II an extended high end without any harshness.
