Best 1176 Clone (Hardware)

Postby jimh76 » Fri Nov 29, 2019 3:21 pm

Hey Peeps,

I'm looking at buying a compressor with a bit of character and wanted peeps opinions as to the one people have used and liked (hardware). I've heard good things about the Klark Teknik 76KT and the Warm Audio version, but just wanted any feedback.

I have never used or heard the original 1176, so don't wouldn't have any opinion as to authenticity, but just wanted a compressor that adds some colour and character to a signal, and know the 1176 is seen as (rightly or wrongly) one of the holy grail compressors. I'd be looking at paying about £150-£200.

I know that the KT (and the Warm audio) are both mono (like the original 1176?) which doesn't bother me as I usually work on a single source. I've got an RNC already for the nice subtle stereo compression, so want something that colour the signal a bit more.

Please don't shout "in the box" at me as I work out the box and like knobs to twiddle.....if that doesn't sound weird.

Thanks,

Jim.

I have the KT76. It does a perfectly good job as far as I am concerned, and it fills the role for me when I need a hardware version of that compression type, but... well, you've said it yourself - if you need hardware that's one thing, but I know which way I'd choose...

We have three Universal Audio 1176LNs.

They sound great, and have a very pro quality feel to them. The only complaint I would have is that it's rather difficult to use them as a stereo pair.

I have a Purple Audio MC77, it does the character thing pretty well and you can couple two in stereo if you so like.

I have the 76-KT as well and find both the sound and build quality really exceeded my expectations. I also have the KT-2a and use this a lot for tracking.

I just bought and started using an EQP-KT and it's so good I'm thinking of getting another one for stereo op. No idea how they can make it at that price - or perhaps we've all been royally rotated into a hole from all pultec clone manufacturers before..

If the Klark Teknikk 76 clone is as good, it's a no brainer.

Cheers peeps. The universal audio and the purple audio are a little out my range.

Think I might go for the Kt76 as it's nearly Christmas!
