I'd buy this if I didn't already have a VFX-SD.

Great sounding synth for an absolute bargain!

Whilst I have fond memories of mine, there is a school of thought that says that 80quid is about right for synth like this. It has it's own sound - a little 'hard' verging on the 'metallic' which makes it stand out against the other S+S synths of the time - in a good way.

But the original VFX was legendarily unreliable! So much so that mine had been stripped down completely and re-built by Ensoniq at the previous owners insistence. Something to do with the way the main boards were seated / connected iirc.

I certainly wouldn't object if one fell into my lap!

I had one here for a couple of weeks back in the dark ages, putting some sounds into it for a proposed cartridge (tho' never heard if they ever used any - at least I got paid) A slightly odd beast, but I coaxed some really nice PPG type things out of it that I've never since managed out of anything else. Looks like it's got some problems but at that price ...

...the keyboard calibration errors and battery replacement on those things can both be a real pain. I hate soldering...

My VFX-SD has got the calibration fault albeit intermittent. I've been quoted £50 to get it fixed. I usually trigger it via MIDI so it isn't that much of a problem anyway.

It's a great for evolving pads and the onboard fx are quite good too.

Sorry to put this in the 'vintage' section but I've always been curious about the VFX as I was a long time Ensoniq user from the Mirage, ESQ-1 and EPS (12) days.

In the opinion of the esteemed twiddlers here, what VI most closely matches the sound and synthesis type of the VFX?

Waldorf PPG Wave 2.x

But for £80 I'd rather have this VFX. :)

Yes, that is a giveaway price, if it was fully functional!

Thinking back, I remember buying a VFX secondhand on the strength of the glowing eulogy issued by SOS (which just reinforces the 'caveat emptor' schtik - http://www.soundonsound.com/SOS/1995_ar ... gear2.html but the original review was in 'June 89 - paper only)!

After a year of being depressed by its sound, I gave it to a Steiner school for free as an instructional tool. IMO, a great synth for learning how to program but a lousy synth to listen to, except for the wave-chaining weirdness, which it shone at.

Ensoniq put so much effort in to the ergonomics and visual feedback of the VFX but they forgot to give it some decent filters, IMO.

Something of an oddity, all round - neither fish nor foul ;-)

...and don't forget the O/S bugs it arrived with. I had my VFX for all of around 45 minutes before it went back for a refund.
