Looking for a Bluetooth/WiFi Audio Receiver to connect to a PA

Postby Agharta » Thu Jan 17, 2019 10:32 am

Want to stream audio from a phone via BT or WiFi or from my BT equipped iPod Classsic.
The reason is that I want to be able to change the music and volume without having to go to the PA. Would rather use a phone as you can adjust the volume in some cases whereas I can’t do that with the iPod I think; must check.

There's the Google Chromecast Audio which has recently been discontinued. It uses WiFi which is not ideal as I don't always have access to that. Also not sure if it requires Internet access which is a deal breaker. It's simple to setup an ad hoc WiFi network but I don't always have access to the internet.
Ideas?

Expensive, but if anything’s going to work well, this’ll be it!

Thanks. £225 is way out of my budget for now but that might be of interest down the line.

Thanks Hugh.
Not sure what inputs are on the powered mixer or whether I'm allowed to use anything but the 3.5mm input jack but can look at that today.
A bonus that it's been reviewed here of course.

Thanks Sam, I will take a look a good at that.
I will check out the range I get in the auditorium as it's not line of site.

The one issue I see is that you can't change the volume with these BT setups or will it respond to when I change the volume on my phone for example?

Klark Teknik will be releasing a range of wireless units soon (Bluetooth and WiFi), however I don’t know the release date or price point.

I know that’s not much use to you but I just thought I’d include it here for information

I have the same. Not used it for a while but, when I did, it never let me down.

I've a pair of these:

which allows me to playback from devices without BT as well. I don't use them that often*, but they always work when I do.

* iThing over Airplay to my airport express is my regular way, as an express lives with each of my mixers anyway.

You phone volume buttons will change the volume of the output from the BT device (just like BT earbuds).

WRT range BT is not great, 30' is usually quoted as max with LoS, less if there's anything in the way. The word 'auditorium' gives me pause for thought, I had been assuming a small bar or similar. For longer distances some kind of WiFi rig is probably necessary (something like Mark's 'regular way'). But, you could buy one of those from Amazon and return it if it doesn't do the business?

I'm not far from the PA though and I think there's just one fairly insubstantial screen in the way.

Worth a try then, especially if you have the chance to send it back if it doesn't;t hack it.
