Neumann KH80+KH750 'Unvarnished Review'

Postby Mike Senior » Sun Feb 02, 2020 6:36 pm

Hi all,

Some of you may know that I do a special monthly Patrons Podcast for supporters of my Cambridge-MT site. This is normally (as the name implies) an exclusive reward for patrons, but this month I've decided to make an exception and open it up to everyone.

Why? Because this episode's Unvarnished Review candidate is the Neumann KH80+KH750 monitor system, and I think it's such an exciting product that I just want to shout about it to as many people as possible! If you're looking an affordable full-range project-studio mixing system that's capable of truly pro-grade results, then you simply cannot afford to ignore this product. For all the details about why I think this, check out the podcast (the review segment starts around 39:50):

Cambridge-MT Patrons Podcast -- January 2020 Episode

Of course, that episode also features my personal mixing tips on Bobby Nobody's song 'Stitch Up' (one of the longest-standing projects in my free multitrack download library) as well as a critique of one library user's own mix, so you might as well check those out too while you're there!

:)

That's quite a glowing review there! I've had the KH750 on my radar for a while, I'll now add it to my 'one day...' list. ;)

Agreed -- and it's not something I do lightly, if you've heard any of my other Unvarnished Reviews! :)

The only thing I'd say is that I'm still in the middle of exploring the additional DSP functions (I'm about to post an update about this), so stay tuned for further info on that....

Will do, but having blown all my money on my room i won't be buying for a long time - probably enough time for them to release a MkII. :)

Lovely review -- it started at 39:50 by the way, so I've altered your time reference above.

I'm really pleased you brought out those points about show clean the sub is and how most low-cost subs add so much harmonic distortion. That's such a fundamentally important point that I keep banging on about... and one of the main reasons why adding a cheap sub to a decent set of monitors almost always makes everything worse, not better!

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the new sub to test out with my own KH310s.

At least being unvarnished, producing the review didn't leave you feeling totally lacquered. ;)

Hi Hugh!

Thanks for the kind words about the review -- it means a lot coming from someone with as much experience in this arena as you!

Funnily enough, I wonder whether it might feel a bit underpowered in that scenario, because the 310s can definitely deliver band-tracking playback levels in the midfield, and I don't think the 750 could keep pace with that. Still, I've used 310s for tracking before now without a sub, and no band has complained about lack of bass, so I suppose you could just leave the 750 switched off for those sessions. :)

Neumann KH80+KH750 'Unvarnished Review' -- Update: DSP Functions

Postby Mike Senior » Fri Feb 07, 2020 12:05 am

Further to the original podcast review, I've also just posted an update about my experiences so far with the Neumann Control App. You can read that here:

Neumann KH80+KH750 Update: DSP Functionality

Obviously, I'll continue to post updates as the situation develops further...

Not having an ipad i haven't tried the app yet, not that the room is finished yet anyway, but would an android version be too much to ask? Or even a phone version of the app?

I'm so demanding. ;)

I'm actually very happy with the volume and bass extension of the 310s, and I'm told that I would need to add two 750s, one on each side, to really benefit. The attraction would be as much about reducing distortion from the 310s bass unit to improve midrange accuracy even more, as it would be bolstering the sub bass spectrum a bit.

So I await a trial with considerable interest.
