Correcting mistakes on the internet since 1853
Re: Hello! How can I contact Admin?
Yeah... Already on the watch list.
Because I'm such a nice, caring and helpful person who tries always to think the best of people, I've given this new forum member the benefit of the doubt by letting his post through the mod queue... but I agree that it does reek of spammage.
If it turns out that my trust was misplaced this lovely member of the human race will join the ever growing list of banned wankers and IP addresses, whilst also knocking my faith in humanity down a little bit more...

I just feel that the spambots are getting more clever.

No, they really aren't... just more tiresome and time-consuming.

Be prepared to be disappointed Hugh. He posted from a static IP in Vietnam that has been reported as a known spam source.

Perhaps in compensation you can attach the sound of a toilet flushing and a long scream to the Send Spammer To The Depths of Hell Delete button!

I can understand the nasty spam that tries to access bank and other info or infect a system but could never understand the benign (if it is) junk that arrives and does nothing but irritate. (In theory)
Do you think it’s from spam trainees? Or spammers not bright enough to figure out code that can do real damage? I haven’t researched this yet but there must be some interesting articles out there.

Re: Hello! How can I contact Admin?
I suspect it's just about getting people to click on a link. The scatter-gun approach, where you simply automate the spam posting to as many forums as possible, probably has some success in achieving that even if the hit rate is 0.001%.
If there was no link in the original post then I'm guessing the chances are high that a follow-up post (when it came) would have contained one, either in textual or clickable form, on the premise that the original post would have garnered attention of some kind and therefore the follow-up stands a higher chance of obtaining the precious click.
It's all relatively trivial to automate in script and there are no end of spam-bots out there sadly.
The link is then only an entry point to whatever comes next, whether malware, some kind of commercial associate link or an attempt to flog you some magic pills to make your beanstalk bigger.

Re: Hello! How can I contact Admin?
It's not really about clicks, in the main (they are a bonus).
It's mostly about search visibility - if they can get links to their site on an existing, well-ranked site (such as SOS), then it bumps their own sites up in the rankings.

Ah, yes, embed your own links, of course that too!
One has to wonder about the wisdom of an opening gambit likely to attract the immediate attention of the Admin user though

Re: Hello! How can I contact Admin?
What easier way than to get onto a forum for a subject that you know nothing about, than by asking a question that has been asked before but some time ago?
On less well moderated or less well used forums, it may well succeed.
In this case though they copied a post they (or someone similar) had used before but the previous time they had added a link in their first post (which was removed by the mods before appearing on the forum pages), so it rather stood out in people's memories.

Re: Hello! How can I contact Admin?
Yes, we get a lot of newbie member cut 'n' paste historic posts either from here or other forums -- harmony central has featured a lot recently, for some weird reason. Most are easy to spot and get removed before any of you see them. But the majority are far more obvious and blatant -- much like the one above.
Thankfully, our moderation queue system for newbies means that even if the first one is let through, the chances are the follow ups won't make it... And even if they do, our sharp-eyed forum members are brilliant at spotting and reporting them which means this is a much cleaner forum than some.

Re: Hello! How can I contact Admin?
There is a theory that a lot of the more stupid spams are deliberately written that way because anybody who falls for one should be themselves pretty stupid and thus easy meat for the spammer to take to the cleaners. Clearly poor strategy on this forum
