Having demoed a plugin, am I now committed to using the manufacturer + "manager" prog, if I want to buy, or can I search for another retail outlet.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Actually, while I'm on the subject-is it necessary to use a manufacturer's download manager at all, when downloading one of their plugins?

It's impossible to generalise about such things. It's quite possible for a programmer to make it such that you can only get to a piece of software via their downloader, but would they? Who knows? I've seen some software insist on a downloader, but if you know where to look you can download without it.

As Elf says, it's impossible to generalise, but when there's an option I invariably opt for the simplest download that gives me a DLL plug-in file that I can copy into my preferred vstplugins folder.

The only exceptions tend to be more complex plug-ins that have accompanying sample libraries, standalone versions and the like, where I tend to once again scrupulously point them at my preferred vstplugins folder, even if they involve an executable install file.
