EMU Planet Earth Sounds?

Postby Arpangel » Wed Aug 28, 2019 9:09 am

I used to have an EMU sample pack for Windows XP, many moons ago, I used to use it a lot, it was one of my main sound sources, especially the sounds from Planet Earth, I liked the ethnic percussion and reed organ sounds especially. I'm wondering if it's possible to get those samples again, but I'm on a Mac now. My options are to look out for a Proteus 2000 or Planet Earth, or maybe, seeing as I have Kontakt it may be possible to get samples, but I haven't seen any.

Thanks, looks like I'll have to buy the full Proteus pack though, for Kontakt, the individual modules are only available in sound font, I think.

You can choose EXS24 format, Kontakt should load/import those just fine, if you just want the sounds.

Yes, but the whole package is tempting, I used to use all of them, they each had great sounds, that extended way beyond the intended genre EMU made them for.

Well thanks. But to be honest, I sold my Emu and switched to the Roland JV2080 and bought the World and Asia boards instead. Roland JV1080/2080 are easier to get hold of. Or is there a specific preset that you're after?

I remember, I spent years hunting down a Planet Earth ROM. I bought an empty Proteus and filled it with ROMs.

B3 ROM
Planet Earth ROM
Vintage ROM
Proteus 2000 ROM

I had a fully loaded Proteus, but at the end of the day, I thought the Roland had the wider range of sounds.

Yes, I'm after specific sounds "Metalophons" and a few reed organ sounds. And TBQH, most of the ethnic percussion in the Planet Earth. I just like the EMU sound, it's got something.

Thanks, I'm in the UK and tend not to buy abroad.
But I'm really looking for a Proteus Earth, or, a Proteus 2000, which has all of those sounds.

Hey, Arpy. I've got a Proteus 2000 sitting totally unused in my rack. I'll PM you about it.

Hi

Did you get this sorted out? The reason I ask is that there is a Proteus 2000 with a World Expedition ROM in the SOS classifieds now for £420 in Slough. Data wheel a bit temperamental but some switch cleaner will sort that out.

The data wheel's rotary encoder will need taking apart and giving a good clean. Switch cleaner alone won't remove the loose carbon that's shorting across the many contacts inside. It's not that fiddly a task. I know because I had to do it on mine.

And Arpy is now in possession of my old Proteus 2000.

When Creative closed down Emu a bunch of us lost our contracts and the libraries we had created for them over the years. Luckily Tim Swartz brokered a licensing deal with them to sell the library soundfonts in various formats. Because of this I have soundfonts of every product ever created and the Planet Earth is one of them - one of my favourite libraries.
