Is the AKG702 still a go-to mixing headphone + do I really need a headphone amp?

Postby Hazer » Tue Sep 29, 2020 11:50 am

Hello again!

Q1 : Is the AKG702 still regarded as a pro mixing headphone
Q2: Do I really need a headphone amp for mixing if I use say Sonarworks and a reference track?

(How do headphone amps actually connect by the way do they just going into the normal headphone jack?)

A1 :- Yes

A2 :- No

External headphone amps usually need a line input. It would be possible but pointless driving one from an existing headphone output

Others will, of course and naturally, be along shortly to sing the praise of other quality mixing headphones, but just to add that I'm perfectly pleased with my 702s.

There are definitely other headphones to consider, but you'll have to work quite hard to find someone who's not happy with their AKG702's...

Sonarworks definitely used to do the calibrated bundle - might be a supply chain issue? Drop them an email. :)

Not quite the same model, but I’m a happy K712 + Sonarworks user.

AKG702's for me too. 65th Anniversary Edition when they dropped the silly price. Also use a LD HPA4 headphone amp. Not sure it makes much difference but having 4 outputs is handy. Pretty sure it was under £20.

Is it too late to cancel cancel culture?

Awww shucks!... I was going to recommend SCAN, for thier b stock 702s, but they are no longer available... I was going to indulge in a pair from there myself.

Still not silly money at the 'normal' price of £120. I paid £78 for mine but I think they got even cheaper a couple of months ago. Maybe the last few pairs weren't quite as good cosmetically, mine looks like new?

Yeah I just bought them at £119, ain't gonna complain too much not exactly breaking the bank for phones people still rate for mixing.

By the way do you have to burn these in at all? What's the best way leave some thrash metal on repeat for 48 hours

Mine were B Stock so, presumably had been used at least a little but I didn't bother burning them in, I'm not convinced it's necessary (and the manufacturers would definitely say it isn't) but I've been wrong before  .

I've got a pair of AKG 712 Pro's, and despite the controversy about 'running in', I ran a CD on repeat overnight with the headphones in their box (to avoid annoying anyone).
