I occasionally play a PRS (such as in this video) and I am most definitely not a dentist! :lol:

I'm down to 3 at the moment, and I'm not even qualified as a Hygienist. I can only think of one Dentist that plays guitar, Mark Bowen from the band IDLES. He’s clearly more of a Fender man.

[What follows isn't a 'pop' at you M'sieur Elf - just me pointing out that a client and I were already well down a specific road before the UK left the free-market.]

Problem for me is that no-one else sells gear that's comparable to the gear I've spec'd for this install.

This all started back in Sept/Oct and there have been delays on the client-side which are perfectly understandable - although I had given a 'Brexit-alert' when I drew up the spec.

When they gave me the green light I pointed out the potential pitfalls and started searching for alternative suppliers at Thomann-equivalent prices (factoring in VAT and import duties of course). Couldn't be done...

So... do I start from scratch, completely re-speccing and coming up with a different solution - and inevitable client-side approval delays - or go for Thomann? In this case I opted for the latter option as the least worse one.

If I was buying for myself, both now and in the future, I'd almost certainly 'buy-British' - whatever that means these days! :)

I suppose there is an argument that as the rules are different in NI there is a lack of consistency across the UK. I'm not sure where we stand with the devolution of powers as well; as I understand it, for example, agriculture is a devolved issue, so if Scotland decide to have different standards*, then you'd have different import requirements depending on where in the UK you were importing your goods to.

* May well happen given the trade bill just passed in the HoC.

I sympathise with the OP - I was lucky enough to get my install order (for a similar overall amount) in before Brexit, and I share the opinion that Thomann offers things others do not. I've just recently ordered a couple of bits from Thomann post-Brexit. Said order consisted of some Sommer cable (by the metre) and a TC Electronic Clarity M.

I was expecting customs charges from UPS when it arrived but none such have yet made their way to me. I'll keep you posted if I get any, or indeed find out why this is the case. As others have intimated, it may have something to do with exactly what I've ordered.

I am probably comming from the point of view of Nation as a geographical term or "4 Nations Sporting event" type thing.

Britian is the mainland
Great Britian - as above + assorted islands
UK - as above + NI
British isles - Great Britian + Ireland {definitely geographical}

Duty is dependent on what the product is and what tarrif (if any) has been agreed with the EU. To find out, you need to identify the appropriate 'commodity code', and then look up what the rate of duty is. It's all in here:

I once imported a crown from the USA for a local gala event (from a pageant supplier). It was really nontrivial to work out what the correct code was, I had to phone a customs advice line and even then it took some time.

Just to say DV24/7 is another supplier badly affected by brexit, made quite a large order, they didn't include new vat receipt, which meant package was stuck in UK for 2 weeks, which meant it was no longer any use, as it was for a project i had a limited time to complete.

Had to cancel order and 3 weeks later still waiting for a refund, spoke to them on a couple of occasions, very poor customer services, have ordered lots of stuff in the past, from them.

Whilst I appreciate there will be teething problems, this went above and beyond, won't be ordering anything from Europe in future, if I need it in a hurry.

It's nothing at you dont worry I like you have never had a thomann order take more than a few days. I think possibly it was because I ordered an item out of stock and then we had the whole DHL not flying issue and it just means my order is probably in some freight container that got held up at customs.

Years gone past I have bought guitars from EU CHina and USA and paid the 4% import duty NOW they want an extra 20% VAT on top !!! This includes second hand and no matter whether its complete or in pieces as this was one way round the import duty. I can understand the logic BUT its a killer cos its going to increase prices of kit based here in the UK since its less competitive buying direct from China etc as I have done before. Even if you go abroad and buy it, customs are going to demand you pay import duty and VAT on goods you bring back.

I am trying to get my bro in the USA to order me some stuff from China and send it to me as a present, I am hoping his might get round the SCAM
