Last May, we detailed how ex-AKG employees had founded a new company, Austrian Audio, following the Harman Group’s decision to close the historic AKG factories in that country. Since then, the mics Austrian Audio have produced have met with acclaim, not least here in SOS.
Given the former AKG engineering team’s expertise, it should come as no surprise that Austrian Audio launched a new range of professional headphones in their second wave of product announcements at NAMM 2020. The Hi-X range is named after the company’s newly developed 44mm high‑excursion driver, and currently consists of two models: the £199$249 on-ear Hi-X50 (shown above on a black background) and the over-ear Hi‑X55 (see pic at top of article), which retails for £249$299. Both models feature user-replaceable earpads, eighth-to-quarter-inch jack adaptors and detachable cables as standard — for more details, see our NAMM video interview. below. And you can find a full review of the Hi‑X55 in the April 2020 issue of SOS, out now!
