UK-based mic manufacturers Sontronics, who are celebrating their 15th birthday, are due to release an upgraded Saturn microphone a little later this spring. The Saturn 2 (in the centre above) maintains the sonic character of the 10-year old original (reviewed back in SOS October 2010) while upgrading the digital control electronics and capsule. Unlike the original Saturn, the new mic is built entirely in the UK. Four more intermediate polar patterns are also selectable in addition to the original mic’s complement of omni, cardioid, sub-cardioid, hypercardioid and figure‑of‑8 patterns. The Saturn 2 is currently anticipated to retail for around £1100 in the UK (a US price hasn’t yet been set).
Announced alongside the Saturn 2 — see https://youtu.be/sCovs_s2w40 — is Sontronics’ Podcast Pro, an altogether more affordable proposition. As its name suggests, the new low-cost supercardioid microphone is aimed at podcasters, voice-over artists and gamers. It’s available in either a black or red finish (as shown above), and includes an integral pop filter. The Podcast Pro retails for just £99 in the UK$159 in the US, and is shipping now. We’ll bring you a review as soon as we can.
