Infinity Vol 1 is the first release from new sample library/virtual instrument development company Pinkertone. And, if you are a media composer working within the broad field of modern drama, action, horror or sci‑fi, Infinity Vol 1 offers a palette of sounds that might well appeal. Essentially, the engine lets you blend up to four of the 660+ multi‑sampled source sounds to create a whole range of drones, pulses, rhythmic beds, pitched impacts, sound effects and synthetic/hybrid playable sounds. No, it’s not a revolutionary concept, but the neat front‑end is nicely executed, offers plenty of sound design options, and easy enough to find your way around.

The 350+ supplied presets provide a good demonstration of the potential. These are divided into eight style‑based categories; Drones, FX, High Tone Pulses, Reversers, Rhythms, Sequences, Synth and Tonal Hits. As suggested by the GUI, your preset can be created by blending any/all of the four sound slots, and each of these allows you to browse individual sounds from a dozen further categories such as drones, drums, effects, rhythms, impacts and sequences. There are some very cool individual sounds here with plenty of ammunition within the drone category and some great accent elements within the impact and tonal impact sections. Perhaps my only gripe is that it would be helpful to be able to audition sounds within the sound slot browsers prior to loading them. Maybe that’s something for a future update?

The fairly minimalist design of the UI belies the impressive degree of sound control offered. Each sound slot provides an identical suite of controls accessed via the six icons beneath the slot. These offer mixer, envelope, step sequencing, effects (with four slots available), ambience and transpose options respectively. The central strip of the UI provides options for modulating the blend between the four sound sources. The Infinity Depth and Rate controls can automatically change the blend or, if preferred, you can disable this and assign the blend to a suitable MIDI CC number for manual control. The further controls provide similar modulation options for effects modulation. In short, there are a multitude of ways to let your inner sound designer do their thing.

Infinity Vol 1 is a lot of fun. The presets are instantly inspiring, and this would make a great workhorse instrument for those underscore drama/tension cues that are a mainstay of modern TV and film soundtracks.
