Who We Are
Established in 1985 and published monthly, Sound On Sound is the world’s leading music and recording technology publication, available in print, tablet, mobile and online formats. With an unrivalled reputation for editorial independence and integrity, every issue is packed with authoritative product reviews, in-depth interviews and expert advice. SOS also has a hugely popular website, YouTube and Podcast channels, and a strong social media presence.
The Role
We are looking for a full-time News Editor who lives and breathes new technology and can take our coverage of this fast-moving sector to new levels. Working alongside our editorial staff and in conjunction with our online and social media team, you will source and gather news relating to product launches and other significant events and write it up quickly and appropriately for our audience using our bespoke Content Management System. The news you produce will appear primarily on the SOS website and our social media channels.
As SOS no longer has a central office, you will be working remotely from home, using your enthusiasm and initiative to sustain the continuous flow of new content we are looking for. You will also be expected to attend our monthly virtual editorial planning meetings, and occasional in-person staff meet-ups in Cambridge.
There will also be opportunities to contribute to other aspects of Sound On Sound’s activities, such as our annual SynthFest UK exhibition for electronic musical instruments. SOS typically attends two or three overseas trade shows each year (pandemic permitting) and you may be expected to travel with us to report on these, as well as attending press launches and other events as required.
In the past, the role of News Editor has been carried out both by employees and by freelancers, and either option is open to the right applicant.
Essential qualities:
- Excellent command of written English.
- Superb attention to detail.
- Knowledge of recording and electronic music equipment.
- Confident self-starter with good time management.
- Good interpersonal skills.
Desirable qualities:
- Audio and video editing skills.
- Experience of working in the musical instrument or audio industry.
