A must-have for sound design?
One of the most interesting new software products that we saw at the NAMM show back in January was Heavyocity’s Vol 1: Evolve. Created by a group of composers and sound designers from New York who specialise in TV and video game soundtracks, it’s designed to present a cutting-edge sound palette in a format that allows users to find the right sound fast.
Much of what’s on offer here is loop-based, and Heavyocity have used the Kontakt 2 front end to build sounds out of numerous layers which can easily and intuitively be broken down into their individual elements.
As you’d expect, everything is diced and sliced to make it work over a wide range of tempos, and the layers are cleverly laid out across the keyboard so that darker elements fall on the bass notes and brighter ones higher up the range.
The included sounds are bang up to date, incorporating menacing processed stings, pounding tribal and junkyard percussion, treated pianos, glitchy beats and much more. Distribution has yet to be finalised, as has pricing, but Heavyocity told us they were hoping to bring it to market within a couple of months at around the $329 mark in the USA. Keep an eye on the Heavyocity web site for the latest news.
