iZotope revive Trash distortion plug-in

Popular effect makes a welcome return

iZotope Trash distortion saturation impulse response filter effect plug-in

iZotope have announced that Trash, their much-loved distortion plug-in that was originally released in 2003, has been reintroduced into their product range. The new version boasts a modern interface design and feature set, comes in both desktop and iPad versions, and also offers a Lite mode that can be enjoyed for free on all platforms.

Trash and Convolve

There are two engines behind the new release: Trash and Convolve. The former takes care of all things distortion, with over 60 effects types offering everything from subtle saturation to “full-on sonic mutation”, while the latter comes loaded with over 600 impulse responses that can be used to morph and filter the input signal. The responses cover a huge range of spaces from tin cans to piano cabinets, along with reversed reverbs and underwater recordings.

Each of the two engines feature their own module in the GUI and come kitted out with a set of dedicated parameters, as well as an X/Y pad that can be used to blend between four different algorithms or impulse responses. A section above the two modules offers a pair of crossover points that make it possible to split the incoming signal into three individual bands and apply different amounts of Trash and Convolve processing to each. For those looking for a starting point or needing some inspiration, there’s also a Dice Roll button that will generate a random patch with a single click.

The lower third of the GUI is occupied by an Envelope section equipped with Modulation, Attack and Release sliders, and a Filter module that offers Frequency, Scream and Heat parameters. A final module then provides input and output gain controls along with switchable Auto Gain and Limiter modes designed to keep the plug-in’s output level under control.
