Markbass Mark Studio 1

Full Marks!
It was at the NAMM show almost a year ago that we were first acquainted with Mark Studio 1, a plug-in from Italian bass amplification specialists Markbass. It contains accurate models of three Markbass amps: one all-tube, one ‘hybrid’ and one solid-state; and six Markbass speaker cabinets, ranging from the 1x15” rear-ported 151HR to the sealed 8x10” Classic 108.

From the plug-in’s graphical interface, users can pick and choose from amps and cabinets, and select from a number of different mics and combinations of mics. Alternatively, there are 64 tried and tested factory presets that have been devised by Markbass engineers and endorsees.

Apart from the knobs found on the hardware versions of the amplifiers, there are controls for a built-in compressor, the placement of the selected mics, and the amount of direct and room sound included in the output signal. Settings can be saved into one of 64 user presets.

The Mark Studio 1 is compatible with Macs and PCs, and works inside Audio Units, VST and RTAS host applications, or in stand-alone mode. The developers say that the plug-in can be used on a multitude of sources, and is useful to “anyone who uses hard disk recording software to create music”. For fans of analogue modelling, it’s worth noting that fellow Italian DSP experts Overloud were heavily involved in the development of the Markbass plug-in.

In the UK, Mark Studio 1 will retail for £199 including VAT.
