Roland launch S-1 Tweak Synth

SH-101-inspired polysynth joins the AIRA range

Roland S-1 Tweak Synth compact SH-101 inspired miniature polysynth

Roland have recently announced the launch of the S-1 Tweak Synth, a miniature polysynth that joins their AIRA family of compact instruments. Inspired by the company’s iconic SH-101, this latest offering boasts onboard sequencing capabilities, a range of performance-based functionality and some innovative wave manipulation features.

The S-1 is powered by Roland’s ACB (Analog Circuit Behaviour) technology, which promises to deliver an authentic-sounding SH-101 experience whilst expanding on the capabilities of the original instrument thanks to four-voice polyphony. Despite the compact form factor, direct hands-on control is provided over the device’s oscillator, filter, envelope and LFO sections, with deeper control possible thanks to a selection of button combos. 26 multi-function pads then function as a keyboard and an interface for a built-in 64-step sequencer.

Square, sawtooth, sub and noise oscillators are available, and users can create their own custom waveshapes using the pads thanks to the inclusion of an OSC Draw function. An OSC Chop feature then allows waveforms to be separated into sections in order to create metallic-sounding timbres, and the noise oscillator can be used independently to add sweeps and pulsing sound effects to patches. The onboard sequencer can store up to 64 patterns, and benefits from features such as motion recording, probability settings, and control over parameters such as velocity and portamento.

The instrument is equipped with a number of features that are intended to inspire dynamic performances, with a Step Loop function facilitating improvised fills and rhythmic variations, whilst a built-in D-Motion controller allows users to trigger sound changes using physical movements. A selection of effects are also on offer, including a chorus derived from the Juno and JX-3P, as well as dedicated delay and reverb processors.

The S-1 features audio, sync and MIDI inputs and outputs, all of which are provided on 3.5mm mini-jack sockets, and accepts power via a USB-C socket. The USB connection also provides audio and MIDI connectivity with DAW software running on a computer or mobile device.
