AEA have just announced the launch of the RPQ503, a new 500-series module based on the third-generation circuitry of their renowned RPQ3 preamp, along with the Snaqbox, a two-slot 500-series chassis.
RPQ503
The new module promises to deliver the rich, natural sound and clean, high-gain performance that users have come to expect from AEA. It builds on the legacy of the RPQ500, introducing an expanded EQ section as well as employing refined circuitry that’s been designed to deliver a clean, responsive performance. The company’s CurveShaper EQ offers sweepable high and low EQ controls with up to ±20 dB of boost or cut, allowing engineers to shape tone directly at the front end of the signal path.
They say that even with extreme settings, the EQ maintains a natural, flattering character and is ideal for enhancing everything from vocals and instruments to ambient recordings. There’s up to 85 dB of clean gain on tap, and an ultra-high 68 kΩ input impedance means that the RPQ503 is optimised for passive ribbon microphones while remaining fully compatible with dynamic and phantom-powered capacitor mics.

Snaqbox
The Snaqbox is a two-slot 500-series chassis that uses separate linear regulators for each slot, ensuring complete power isolation between modules, while a Link/Cascade switch allow signals to be routed between the two channels without any external connections. As well as providing a high-quality platform for hosting a pair of AEA’s own modules, the unit adheres to the 500-series standard and so is compatible with all standard third-party modules.

“Our focus has always been on developing ultra-low noise, low-distortion preamps for those who demand high, clean gain. With the RPQ503, we’ve brought our best third-generation preamp design to the 500 Series format, making it a flexible and portable front end for everything from intimate vocals to loud instruments.” - Julie Tan, CEO, AEA
