Erica Synths introduce the Formant

New DIY modular system announced

Erica Synths Elektor Formant DIY modular synth

Erica Synths have an extensive range of Eurorack modules and standalone instruments and effects, but they originally launched as a company dedicated to creating DIY Eurorack kits. They’ve kept that spirit alive with the mki x es.EDU DIY series, but their latest release sees them pull out all the stops with a recreated and extended version of the Elektor Formant synthesizer that was originally released as a DIY kit by Elektor Magazine during the late 1970s.

Named the Formant, the new rig has been developed alongside Harald Antes of haraldswerk.de, who has helped Erica Synths to recreate the original design as well as adding some additional modules that enhance its functionality. As with the Elektor, the system features some internal wiring that allows it to be played without any patching.

The kit includes a total of 27 modules, all of which have been designed to be DIY friendly, although the company point out that the nature of the system means that it’s aimed at experienced builders who have all the necessary tools for calibration and troubleshooting — namely a multimeter and oscilloscope.

Two versions are available: a full kit that includes all of the components needed to build the complete system, and a partial kit that includes the enclosure, PSU, PCBs, panels, potentiometers, switches, jack sockets and custom parts, and allows users to source their own general components. Erica Synths say that they don’t make much profit on the components, and so the full kit will likely be the most convenient option for those who don’t already have an extensive electronics stock of their own.

Pricing & Availability

The Format kits are available to order now, with the partial kit priced at €2300 and the full kit costing €3000. Shipping is expected to commence on 21 August 2025.
