AEA show off their KU5A supercardioid ribbon mic

We get the story behind the unusually robust new ribbon mic

We brought you the news of a brand new and unusual microphone from ribbon specialists AEA just recently, but now our in-house mic expert and Features Editor Sam Inglis gets his hands on the new KU5A. Inspired by the RCA BK-5, the KU5A sports a supercardioid polar pattern, rather than the more standard figure-of-8.

What’s more, the KU5A is designed to be used without a pop shield, boasting the most protected ribbon element in any AEA mic with seven layers of protection.

Sam gets the full story from the show floor at the AES Convention in New York.
