Sonarworks have put their calibration expertise to work on a new mobile app that allows users to create their own personalised Dolby Atmos headphone profile. Available for iOS and Android devices, SoundID Tools promises to deliver improved spatial accuracy when monitoring immersive mixes on headphones, and has been officially approved by Dolby themselves.
The app uses a phone’s camera to capture the user’s head and ears, and then uses Dolby’s technology to create a personalised HRTF file that can be imported into the Dolby Atmos Renderer application — or the built-in renderer in supported Atmos-capable DAWs. Once the process has been carried out, users will enjoy improved perception of the direction, distance and height of sources in their immersive mixes.
The Process
Setting up a personalised profile takes just a few minutes, and requires nothing beside a mobile phone. Here’s a quick overview of the process:
- Download the free SoundID Tools mobile app.
- Scan your head and ears using your phone’s camera to create your Dolby Headphone Personalization profile.
- Apply your profile to Dolby Atmos Renderer & Dolby Atmos rendering in supported DAWs to improve spatial and tonal accuracy when mixing on headphones.
- Experience Dolby Atmos headphone monitoring — personalised to you.
The Benefits
- Improved spatial accuracy, tonal clarity and balance.
- Seamless integration with Dolby Atmos creation tools.
- Reliable immersive mix checking on headphones.
- Greater confidence when mixing — and more consistent results across playback systems.
- A monitoring baseline that travels with you — studio or remote.
"Every creator's physical characteristics are unique, which affects how they experience immersive audio over headphones. By combining Dolby's technology with Sonarworks' calibration expertise, the app enables more accurate Dolby Atmos monitoring. We are excited to work with them, and our DAW partners, to bring advanced headphone experiences to Dolby Atmos creators everywhere." - David Gould, Sr. Director of Content Creation and Distribution, Dolby Laboratories
