Guitar effects experts Electro-Harmonix have teamed up with MixWave to turn a collection of their most prized pedals into plug-ins. The EHX Classics Bundle includes four plug-ins that offer a meticulous recreation of six effects, placing the company’s renowned tones in the hands of DAW users.
What’s Included?
The Big Muff Pi Collection
First up is one of the most iconic pedals of all time, the Big Muff. There have been many different versions and design revisions over the years, and the new plug-in collection provides three of the most popular iterations. Classic, Ram’s Head and Russian circuit recreations offer everything from smooth sustain to aggressive low-end punch, with the plug-in said to accurately capture the unique responses and tonal differences of each version.
Electric Mistress
Next up is the Electric Mistress, a flanger that was originally introduced in the 1970s, and still forms part of their current line-up. The companies have employed component-level modelling to capture the behaviour of the pedal’s analogue signal path, faithfully recreating the sweeping, shimmering tones for which the effect is renowned.
Deluxe Memory Man
The Deluxe Memory man is another much-loved classic, combining delay, chorus and vibrato effects that were originally crafted with the aim of offering a solid-state alternative to tape echo units. Once again, the plug-in is said to provide a lifelike recreation of the original pedal, delivering everything from standard delay effects to lush chorusing and pitch-warped textures.
Small Clone
The last of the four plug-ins emulates the Small Clone, a chorus effect that helped shape the tones of some of the biggest rock, grunge and post-punk records. Described by EHX as “lush, wide and full of movement”, the effect stays true to its analogue counterpart and introduces some subtle irregularities that add a sense of “depth and musicality”.
Compatibility
The EHX Classics Bundle is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or above, and Macs running macOS 10.13 and higher. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available. Authorisation is carried out using PACE’s iLok system — iLok 2/3 USB dongles, iLok Cloud and machine-based licensing options are all supported.
