These audio examples accompany my review of the Chandler TG Type L microphone. I’ve provided a few examples to demonstrate how this cardioid capacitor mic sounded in both its System A and System B settings. For all the examples, I used the preamps on my Audient ASP8024 console with no additional processing.

01_Drum OH_A
This is how the Type L sounded as a mono drum overhead mic positioned about 3-4 feet above the centre of the kit. Please forgive the author's rusty drumming skills!
02_Drum OH_B
System B on drums certainly seemed to have more of a ribbon-like quality to my ears with the hi-hat in particular seeming softer than in the System Aexample.
03_Female Vox_A
UK folk artist Naomi Randall’s voice provides a great illustration of the subtle differences between the Type L's voicing options. I liked the subtle sense of ‘air’ in her voice in this setting.
04_Female Vox_B
How Naomi’s voice sounded in the B setting. I would have been very happy to use either option for the session!
05_Distorted GTR_A
Chandler seem keen on their website to share how effective the Type L mic is when used to close mic a guitar cabinet. Here’s how it fared in its a setting when positioned around one inch from the centre of the cone of an Orange 4x12 cabinet pared with a Fender Supersonic head.
06_Distorted GTR_B
The same electric guitar part recorded with the B setting.
07_Kick Drum_A
In both these examples, I had the mic’s -10dB pad engaged when positioned outside my 22-inch Rogers kick drum at a distance of around 1-2 inches. You can clearly hear the a setting has more of a ‘blown out’ saturated sound.
08_Kick Drum_B
Chandler describe setting B with the -10dB pad engaged as the ‘extreme’ SPL setting for the Type L, and this example seems to confirm this when captured to the previous example. The mic now appears more at ease in this high SPL environment.
09_Acoustic GTR_A
An example of how the Type L sounded on a fingerpicked acoustic guitar part. The mic was positioned pointing towards the 4th-5th fret at a distance of around a foot.
10_Acoustic GTR_B
On a much quieter source, the differences between the two voicings seemed less prominent. Can you hear the difference when the mic is in its B setting?
