Beetlecrab Tempera receives major update

V2.1 significantly expands granular synthesis capabilities

Beetlecrab Tempera v2.1 update

Beetlecrab have released Tempera v2.1, a major firmware update for its flagship hardware granular synthesizer. We first covered the Tempera in our August 2024 edition - read the full SOS review here. The v2.1 firmware brings renewed sound design possibilities and fresh functionality.

This major update brings the ability to use Tempera as a synced live grains FX processor, allowing real-time granular audio manipulation. The update also introduces Rake, a custom-designed comb filter with a tuned feedback path, capable of anything from subtle resonances to aggressive, harmonically rich textures. Modulation options have been expanded with new sources and destinations, along with refinements to the UI which now offers clearer visual functionality.

Tempera’s reverb and delay effects have been completely redesigned, now said to deliver richer spatial processing and depth. A new Attack option ensures that the first emitted grain has a sharp and defined onset, perfect for creating crisp percussive textures within dense grain clouds. Tap tempo and internal clock control have been added for seamless synchronisation, and MIDI clock handling has been significantly improved for tighter performance.

Additional refinements include new exotic and pentatonic scales, MIDI note output from the internal keyboard and automatic track tuning to BPM/Hz when specified in filenames. A built-in QR code now provides instant access to the online manual, and MIDI Program Change support allows quick switching between settings.
