Two notes unveil the Captor X+

True Stereo DynIR Engine, Virtual Load Shaper & more

Two notes Audio Engineering Captor X+ reactive load box silent tube valve amp

Two notes Audio Engineering’s Captor X reactive load box and cabinet simulator has built up a solid reputation since its release in 2020, and now, the company have announced the launch of a new and improved version. The Captor X+ offers deeper control, enhanced stereo functionality and some new tone-shaping tools, all of which have been designed specifically for real valve amplifiers and modern silent stage/studio rigs.

As with its predecessor, the Captor X+ is available in 8 and 16 Ω versions, and is rated use at up to 100W RMS, allowing the unit to be paired up with a wide variety of modern and vintage valve amps. An onboard three-step attenuator makes it possible to push amps into their ‘sweet spots’ without reaching deafening levels, and it’s possible to run the unit with no cabinet at all for a completely silent stage or studio session.

True Stereo DynIR Engine

There are two significant upgrades introduced by the new arrival, the first of which is Two notes’ new True Stereo DynIR Engine, which they say offers a significant step up in terms of spatial realism. Players can now position and pan two microphones or static IRs independently within the stereo field, with dual mono routing allowing each microphone to feed a dedicated output, complete with its own mic and post-effects chain. Whether users are looking for wide stereo space or focused mono precision, the new engine promises to ensures that direct guitar sound “translates with clarity and intent in any environment”.

Virtual Load Shaper

Next up is the Virtual Load Shaper function, which offers extensive control over the character of a direct amp signal. By applying selectable and customisable impedance curves post-load, the new feature extends the Captor X +’s abilities beyond that of a traditional load box. Profiles can be auditioned instantly via the XLR or headphone outputs, with precisely tuned options or custom settings designed to tighten low-end response, enhance harmonic weight or sharpen attack and articulation.

Along with the headline additions, the new version retains everything that made the original popular. An onboard set of DSP tools offer a range of built-in EQ, reverb and an Enhancer effect, and every parameter can be edited in detail using the company’s Torpedo Remote desktop and mobile software. As for connectivity, dual XLR outputs are joined by a dedicated headphone output, while USB, Bluetooth and MIDI connectivity ensure compatibility with a wide range of setups.

“The Captor X + represents the next evolution of the Captor X concept. The Captor X’s widespread adoption gave us direct access to real-world feedback from one of the largest professional user bases in this category. Players asked for one-mic-per-output precision, deeper stereo immersion and greater control over their direct sound. Captor X + is our response, delivering all these expanded capabilities while retaining the same compact footprint and accessible professional price point that made its predecessor so popular. Featuring the all-new True Stereo DynIR Engine and our pioneering Virtual Load Shaper, Captor X + puts the full force of your tube amp under your command, with more power, flexibility and creative control than ever.” - Guillaume Pille, CEO of Two notes Audio Engineering
