While Crane Song are undoubtably best known for their high-end hardware, they also offer a small range of plug-ins that focus on emulating analogue devices and media such as tape machines and vinyl. Phoenix II falls into the former category, and although it has remained a popular product since being introduced over a decade ago, it has only been available to Pro Tools users.
The company have now announced the availability of a new beta version of Phoenix II that includes VST3 and AU versions, making the plug-in available to non-Pro Tools users as well as offering Native Support for Apple Silicon-equipped Macs. In terms of functionality, the plug-in remains the same, offering five different tape modes derived from the HEDD (Harmonically Enhanced Digital Device) technology employed in Crane Song’s high-end D-A converters.
You can take a look at our review of Crane Song’s plug-in collection back in October 2014 for more details.
Compatibility
Phoenix II is supported on PCs running Windows (no minimum version specified) and Macs running macOS 10.15 and above. In addition to the existing AAX version, the beta includes AU and VST3 plug-ins. Currently, the beta only includes an AAX native plug-in, so Pro Tools users wishing to use AAX DSP should remain on previous versions.
Pricing & Availability
Phoenix II is available now, priced at $449.
