The Crow Hill Company’s latest release delivers an answer to that age-old question: “what would a piano sound like if its strings were replaced by gongs?” Created from a collection of gong samples processed by the company’s new Shepherd Mapping technique and housed in their all-new in-house engine and GUI, Gong Piano aims to offer something a little different from your average library.
The instrument captures a set of four gongs from Rome, Italy, and features hits, scrapes, harmonics and drones designed by company founder Christian Henson. The core samples have been mapped across the keyboard so they can be played chromatically, and will respond in much the same way as a piano would. The sound they deliver is, as you might expect, a little different from a normal piano!
Gong Piano is capable of delivering everything from soft, metallic tones reminiscent of a marimba, percussive sounds that mimic a hang drum or softly played steel pan, through to the more aggressive sounds that you’d expect of a gong. Take a look at the video below to see and hear what the latest offering is capable of.
