Reason Studios have announced the launch of the latest update to their popular DAW and virtual instrument platform. With the release of Reason 13.1, users gain a whole host of new features including two Player MIDI effects, custom tagging in the Reason Browser and device palettes, and some improvements to the software’s sequencer.
The first of the new Player MIDI effects is Random Tool which, as its name suggests, serves to introduce some “controlled randomness” into a track. It can be used to apply random changes to parameters such as pitch, velocity and note length, and is said to be a quick and fun way to create organic-sounding variations to existing ideas. Next up is Note Tool, which provides detailed control over the likes of velocity curves, note transposition and sustained chords without the need to use a pedal.
Reason Studios have also made some significant changes to the Browser system that was implemented in Reason 13. With the latest update installed, users will be able to add their own tags to the standard set already defined by the software. Here’s a full list of what’s possible with the new system:
- New, searchable 'Author’ metadata that shows the name of sound designer that created a patch
- Sample and REX loops now feature columns for tempo and length
- You can now filter by container (ReFill, Pack, Folder, Rack Extension)
- You can now categorise and tag items directly from the right-click context menu
- You can now switch browse focus without closing the Browser
- New Info area in Browser view displays item information and tags
The Device Palette has also been updated, and now features new customisation options that make it possible to save favourite devices or hide unwanted ones, as well as categorise plug-ins and create custom tags.
Reason 13 introduced the most significant overhaul of the Reason sequencer to date, and the company have continued its development in the latest update, implementing two small but highly requested features. In Reason 13.1, the sequencer now offers a Chop/Clip Note To action that can be used to quickly split notes or clips into note-division values, as well as a new Split At Song Position command that will separate any selected clip based on the location of the song position pointer.

Reason 13.1 is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or higher, and Macs running macOS 10.15 and above. When using Reason as a plug-in, VST3, AU and AAX versions are provided.
