Summer NAMM 2009: BreezSong Jam Hub (Video)

The silent rehearsal studio
The BreezSong JamHub is a mixer conceived to make rehearsing cheaper and quieter. Many bands regularly spend money booking rehearsal facilities because domestic situations aren’t ideal for making the amount of noise usually produced by a rehearsing band. The JamHub allows players to plug themselves in and set the level of their own headphone signal, which carries a mix of the signals from all connected bandmates.

There are three models available: the BedRoom; the GreenRoom, and the TourBus, which each have a number of mixer ‘pods’: one for each player in the band. The BedRoom is the smallest of the JamHubs. It has four pods plus a main mixer section (more on this later), enabling a maximum of five musicians to plug in and play. The GreenRoom has six mixer pods suitable for seven simultaneous players, as does the TourBus, although this model has additional functionality in the form of an on-board Flash recorder. Both the GreenRoom and the TourBus are capable of supplying 48Volts to phantom-powered mics.

Each pod has mic and instrument inputs that can be used simultaneously, plus a headphones output. There are controls for tweaking the input and output levels, as well as a bank of level knobs for setting up custom mixes for each pod, so everyone can have their own dedicated mix on headphones. When a player alters their mix, the other players’ headphones feeds are not impacted, because each pod has its own bank of controls. Other knobs on the pods enable users to send their own instrument to an on-board effects processor, and pan the signal around the stereo field.

All three JamHubs have an ‘R’ section, which functions like the other pods, but is designed so that an MP3 player or similar device can be plugged in and its signal mixed with the incoming instruments. The ‘R’ stands for recording, as it’s the pod intended to create your mix for capturing a rehearsal. An additional mic can also be fed into the ‘R’ section, and used as in any other pod.

Various accessories are available for the JamHubs. There’s a wired remote control called the SoleMix, which enables musicians out of reach of the JamHub — drummers or keyboard players, for example — to control all the aspects of their mix. Also, headphone-extension cables, complete with colour-coded rings that correspond with the JamHub pods, can also be ordered from BreezSong. For further information, head to the BreezSong web site.
