SuperKar+ module from Strymon

Eurorack module boasts 32 voices of string synthesis

Strymon SuperKar+ string synthesis Karplus-Strong Eurorack module

Strymon may be best known for their guitar pedals, but their product range also includes a few Eurorack modules that bring their renowned effects into the world of modular synths. Their latest offering, though, brings something a little different to the table: 32 voices of string synthesis!

As its name suggests, SuperKar+ uses Karplus-Strong synthesis to create a range of plucked and bowed string sounds, as well as struck or blown pipes and an assortment of other sounds that range from percussive textures to melodies and chords. Strymon say that SuperKar+ is an engaging and responsive instrument, with tiny changes in the likes of attack and decay times resulting in timbral shifts, and variable per-note detuning offering lifelike realism.

Everything is housed in a 12HP module, with a set of eight dual-purpose knobs teaming up with an Alt button to offer hands-on control over 16 parameters. The lower half of the panel is divided into two sections: Solo Voice and Chord Voice, each of which is kitted out with its own dedicated set of patch points. It’s possible to play both sections simultaneously or independently of each other — both can be triggered and pitched via CV, and the latter can also be played polyphonically via MIDI. Independent level controls are provided for both sections, and it’s possible to route them each to their own dedicated output.
