Released in 2012, Triton Audio’s D2O Microphone Preamp offered a versatile range of sounds thanks to a combination of solid-state and subminiature valve circuitry — unfortunately, the dwindling availability of parts and rising manufacturing costs led to it being discontinued a few years back. All is not lost, though, as the company have now resurrected the popular unit as a DAW plug-in.
D2O Plugin is Triton’s first step into the world of software, and has been created using neural network-based technology that the company say has captured all of the soul and nuances of the D2O. As with many software recreations, the plug-in does rather more than just emulate the circuitry of the original unit, and comes loaded with enhancements and extras that were not present in the hardware.
Alongside the switchable Tube and FET modes and Lo/Hi operating level switches, the plug-in has gained a variable high-pass filter and a tilt EQ feature that were not provided on the original unit. It’s capable of delivering everything from subtle ‘warmth’ to more aggressive overdriven sounds, making it a versatile solution that should be well at home on a wide range of sources. Another feature exclusive to the software version is the mix control, allowing users to blend in some of their unprocessed signal — something which will be particularly useful when using more heavy-handed settings.
Compatibility
D2O Plugin is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or above, and Macs running macOS 10.13 and higher. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
Pricing & Availability
