Bassists love Basis

Vir2's latest virtual instrument
Basis is the most recent release from Vir2, a subsidiary of sample specialists Big Fish Audio. It’s a sample-based virtual instrument that has a patch for pretty much every bass you’ll ever need, from fretted and non-fretted electric to upright and synth bass.

Basis comprises 7GB of 24-bit samples, which are multi-sampled with articulations such as hammer-ons, slaps, pull-offs and falls, enabling the user to create realistic-sounding bass lines using nothing but a MIDI keyboard and a bit of simple programming.

A selection of instruments were used to compile the library, including Fender Jazz and Precision Basses, plus models from Rickenbacker and Musicman. There are also patches to replicate the sounds of famous players, such as Jaco Pastorius and Paul McCartney, and over 100 synth patches should give you enough sounds to play with, should you get tired of the sound of the real thing.

Basis is powered by Native Instrument’s Kontakt Player 2, which runs inside VST, Audio Units and RTAS DAWs, and can be used by itself, without any additional software. You can find audio demos at the web site of UK distributor Time + Space.

Basis costs just under £150 and is available now.
