In recent years, a few companies have released plug-ins inspired by FL Studio’s Fruity Soft Clipper, and the latest take on this popular processor comes from AIR Music Technology. Aimed at those working in genres such as R&B, drum and bass, rap, and edgy pop, AIR Soft Clipper is said to re-engineer traditional clipping technology and provide users "with the ultimate energy and clarity in their mixes".
A Quick View presents a simplified GUI that provides instant access to the plug-in’s essential controls, aiming to help users of all levels quickly achieve their desired results. A Drive control defines the overall amount of saturation, ranging from subtle enhancements to more extreme effects, and is followed by a Post Level dial that can be used to control the plug-in’s output level. A meter provides some visual feedback, and that’s it!
For those who want more in-depth control over their sound, switching to Advanced Mode will reveal an additional set of controls that make it possible to fine-tune the plug-in’s processing. A Shape parameter adjusts the clipping curve, facilitating everything from smooth transitions to hard-hitting effects, while True Peak and Anti-Alias modes help to minimise unwanted artifacts, and a Release toggle switch determines how quickly the effect fades out. Stereo Link mode ensures channels are correctly matched when processing stereo signals, and the balance between processed and unprocessed signals can be set via a Mix control. Finally, an Out Level provides a final gain stage at the plug-in’s output.
