RNCM & Access To Music team up to deliver new foundation degree
The talents of session musicians are so often overlooked, with artists and producers normally receiving all the credit. To further compound their position, it’s incredibly tricky to get noticed and obtain work. So the announcement that one of the world’s leading conservatoires, the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), have teamed up with contemporary music education specialists Access To Music, to deliver a Foundation Degree for rock and pop session musicians, will be welcome news.

The new course provides vocational training for guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard players and vocalists aged 18 and over who intend to work as freelance musicians outside of the classical music sector. As part of the course, they’ll receive weekly one-on-one instrumental sessions with top professionals (including sax legend Snake Davis, pictured, and Prodigy guitarist Jim Davies), and will also learn valuable business and entrepreneurial skills.
Even though it’s not due to commence until September, the course has already gathered support for prominent members of the music community, including Jools Holland, who commented “as a music artist who regularly employs session musicians, I wholeheartedly support this course as it gives a fantastic opportunity for aspiring musicians to get the training they need to work in this role”.
To be accepted on the course, applicants must demonstrate a high level of performing ability, equivalent to ABRSM/Rockschool grade 8, plus a high level of music theory understanding.
There’s an Open Day on Tuesday the 29th April, at the RNCM in Manchester. Click here for more information, and to book your place.
