Bela have revealed that the innovative ‘touch recorder’ module they were showing at last year’s Superbooth and Machina Bristronica shows is now available for pre-order. The Trails builds on the success of the Gliss, expanding on the idea of recordable touch control and presenting users with a fully polyphonic system that offers a fresh new take on music creation.
The device features four channels that are each equipped with X and Y position outputs, and allows gestures to be recorded individually or across multiple channels, making it possible to carry out anything from single-parameter modulation to programming complex multi-voice parts. The generated curves can be freely switched between continuous curves and stepped, quantised signals, allowing drawn movements to be transformed into melodies and rhythms using a collection of built-in scales — custom tunings are also possible.
A set of transformation tools make it possible for captured gestures to be rotated, pinched or spatially offset while preserving their original character; the transformations themselves can be recorded and applied non-destructively, and they can also be applied on a per-channel basis. The Trails also features multiple banks of eight touch-controlled faders that allow users to set, chain and morph between parameter states using adjustable slew times.
The module outputs both CV and MIDI, meaning it can be used to trigger all manner of hardware and software instruments as well as Eurorack rigs. The system also includes a breakout module that can be placed to the left, right or above the main unit, allowing users to ensure the layout suits their rig.
Key Features
Core
- Record gestures of up to 40 seconds across four channels.
- Simultaneously generate melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and control elements.
- Control Eurorack systems and MIDI-compatible hardware or software.
- Two touch-controlled CV outputs (X and Y) plus a gate output per channel.
- Fully customisable voltage ranges for all CV and gate outputs.
- One CV input for modulation and reset per channel.
Gesture Recording & Playback
- Record gestures individually or across multiple channels.
- Quantise CV and gate signals for melodic, tempo-sync’ed output.
- Dynamically offset the playback of gestures against one another.
- Touch control of gesture playback position, speed and loop points.
- Divide and multiply incoming clocks.
Transformation & Smoothing
- Transform recorded gestures using rotation, pinch and offset.
- Non-destructively record and undo all transformations.
- Filter and smooth gestures to suspend motion in time.
Macros & Scenes
- Interpolate between eight banks of eight touch faders.
- Control eight parameters at once using a single macro fader.
- Store and recall up to 16 scenes.
-
Ergonomics & Layout
- Outputs housed on a separate panel for flexible placement.
- Includes a 1U panel for optimised ergonomics in your case.
Pricing & Availability
The Trails is available to pre-order now for $449£406.80 including VAT / €389. The first units are expected to ship in July 2026.
