Sonicware have already announced their first release of 2025, and it’s one of their most ambitious projects to date. Named CyDrum, the latest addition to the company’s line-up is an all-digital drum synth that’s powered by a pair of wavetable oscillators and packs in an array of effects, sequencing and creative performance capabilities.
All of the sounds are created using a mixture of wavetables, noise and pulse sources, with 22 sound structures dedicated to creating everything from classic drum machine tones to synth sounds. There are 64 wavetables included, and users are provided with full control over the likes of start and end playback positions, playback direction, speed and more. Up to two parameters for each sound can be controlled via velocity and pressure on the CyDrum’s drum pads, offering expressive real-time control during a live performance.
The instrument includes an onboard eight-track sequencer equipped with generative pattern tools including randomisation and probability functions, along with a tape-inspired VariSpeed effect and global control over parameters such as length and release settings. A collection of 22 insert effects are present, with each track capable of accessing any two simultaneously, while five master effects make it possible to add the finishing touches at the end of the processing chain. There’s a flexible routing system, too, with each track benefitting from a choice of five different pre-configured signal paths.
As for connectivity, the CyDrums features a pair of analogue line-level outputs and two switchable line/instrument inputs (all on quarter-inch TRS sockets), along with five-pin DIN MIDI I/O and 3.5mm Sync I/O. A pair of 16-bit/48kHz digital inputs and outputs are provided over USB. Power can be delivered by an external DC supply or the unit will run on six AA batteries, and there’s also a built-in speaker.
