Original released in 2005 and treated to a design overhaul in 2009, the POG (or Polyphonic Octave Generator) has become a hugely popular member of the Electro-Harmonix family. The company have now announced the launch of the POG3, which boasts an additional voice, 100 user presets, enhanced effects and routing, a wealth of expressive control capabilities and more.
The pedal still relies on the same polyphonic octave-generating algorithm, which is renowned for its fast tracking and accuracy and delivers impressive results on both individual notes and chords. It now includes an extra +5th voice, with the dry guitar signal now joined by a total of five additional voices: -2 octave, -1 octave, +5th, +1 octave and +2 octave. As before, the level of each voice is defined by a set of dedicated top-panel sliders which, thanks to the newly added stereo capabilities, are now joined by a collection of per-voice pan controls.
The POG3 upgrades the popular pedal with a stereo signal path, additional built-in effects and a wealth of expressive control thanks to expression, CV and MIDI connectivity.
A new multi-mode filter with envelope control and an adjustable Q has been added to the effects section, and improvements have been made to the Detune effect, which now features a new Spread control. The all-important Attack control remains, meaning the pedal is still geared up for creating a whole host of swelling sound effects. All of the units voices and effects can now be controlled either via an expression pedal/CV input or over MIDI, and users can save and recall up to 100 of their favourite settings directly on the pedal using its onboard OLED display and navigation encoder. The company have also developed a new EHXport desktop application that allows presets to be edited, stored and organised from a Mac or PC.
