Frankfurt 2009: Elysia Museq

Stereo EQ processor

Elysia, who brought us the highly acclaimed Mpressor compressor (reviewed in SOS August 2008), have announced the Museq, which they describe as a “musical equaliser”. Like the Mpressor, it’s a two-channel, 2U rackmountable device with a seriously robust feel.

Both channels have five EQ bands that each have two knobs and two buttons. The three centre bands (marked Bottom, Middle and Top) all have a ‘notch’ button that narrows the bandwidth of the filter, to ‘zoom in’ on specific frequency bands. The two bands on the periphery of each five-band cluster (Low and Hi) have buttons that switch the filter between standard shelving and low- or high-cut, the latter with a resonance ‘bump’.

On all five controls, the second of the two buttons flips the gain control between cut and boost. The gain control, therefore, ranges from 0dB when fully left, to 15dB when fully right, instead of having a centre indent at 0dB.

Other quirky features of the Museq include a master section limiter, which is designed to provide “stronger coloration”. This has no parameters, just per-channel ‘on/off’ switches located below the illuminated logo. The device is expected to cost around 3990 Euros (£3615 at the time of writing) when it becomes available later this year.
