London-based FX Rentals have long been known as the people to call when you need to hire some studio gear. They make the claim that they’ve got the widest range of audio equipment in Europe and, as their slogan once said “we never close”, and they still don’t. In recent years, they’ve branched out, with services such as Copyroom, who duplicate, restore and back up from almost any audio format imaginable, and Drumhire who, well, three guesses what they do.
FX’s latest initiative is YourSpace, a service that lets clients hire what’s essentially a room that’s empty of everything apart from a 5.1 monitoring system, acoustic treatment and some comfy-looking furniture. The idea is that YourSpace clients bring their own equipment and instruments, or hire it from FX Rentals with a stonking 75 percent discount, so they don’t pay for equipment they don’t use.
There are two rooms available, each with a vocal booth, air conditioning and natural light. There’s even a communal lounge with Internet access and a TV. Rooms are bookable in three-hour sessions, at a price of £15 (excluding VAT) per hour. A day rate of £135 block-books the studio from 10am until 10pm.
