Electric Toy Museum

Univers Sons take a trip down memory lane
What do you get when you mix 97 retro musical toys and the staff of Parisian sample-based instrument creators Univers Sons in a studio full of top-notch mics and preamps? Electric Toy Museum, the latest addition to the Universal Sound Bank of instruments powered by the UVI engine, that’s what. It comprises an astounding 14,000 samples, compiled as effects libraries, playable instruments and drum loops, in over 1000 presets.

Great care was taken when recording the instruments included in the library. According to the development team, it’s “the cheap speakers they use” as well as the acoustic properties of the casings that define the sound of the toys. To capture the pure retro essence of the toys used, a professional studio was booked out, and the team made sure they found the right mic and preamp combination for each instrument! Every note was recorded, at multiple velocity layers if applicable, and other sounds such as key clicks and release sounds were captured to make the end result as realistic as possible.

Developers say that Electric Toy Museum, which costs $249 (£162 at the time of writing) will appeal to virtually everyone, “whatever the kind of music you produce”. If you’d like more information, check out the UVI Sound Source web site, where you’ll find a fabulous video demo that shows what Electric Toy Museum is capable of.
